Copenhagen Kastrup Airport - History

Copenhagen Kastrup Airport was inaugurated in April 1925 - making it one of the world's first civilian airports. In its early years the runway was grass, with sheep keeping the grass short between take offs and landings.

During World War II Copenhagen Kastrup Airport was mainly closed to the public, and it was in this period that a large modern terminal and a hard surface runway were built - making it one of Europe's most advanced airports at the time, when it reopened after the war.

During the 1940s and 1950s the airport saw a huge increase in air traffic. Further major expansion projects followed in the 1960s and 1980s, including a second runway.
