Lynden Pindling International Airport History

It was 1940 when the first airfield in the Bahamas opened. At that time the airport was named after the millionaire Harry Oakes. The investor made it possible to complete the first air gateway development to the island country in the Caribbean with its large financial contribution. During both World Wars the Oakes Field became a Royal Air Force station and used for delivery flights to locations in North Africa Europe.

With the withdrawal of the RAF in 1946, the airport returned to civil operations, starting serving also long range flights. In 1957 the airport passed its functions as international hub to Nassau International Airport at Windsor Field.

The airport was renamed in 2006 after the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Sir Lynden Pindling, who is recognised for its accomplishments during his term. Over the years several expansion were undertaken, adjusting the infrastructure to world-class standards and better service of the increased traffic.

The airport is one of the few facilities comprising a US border pre-clearance station. This allows all US flights to operate as domestic upon arrival at their final destination in America.
