Faro Airport History

Faro Airport, also known as Algarve Airport, opened to the public in July 1965, following a rise in popularity for the Algarve area with tourists during the 1960s.

Low cost airlines began to fly into Faro during the 2000s, resulting in a huge increase in passenger movements – now over 6 million per year.

In 2015 the airport celebrated its 50th anniversary by announcing a €33 million expansion plan, including the expansion and remodelling of its main terminal building.

Faro Airport is located 4km (2.5 miles) to the west of the southern Portuguese city of Faro, in the country’s Algarve region. It is a 25-minute drive from Villamoura and a 35-minute drive from Albufeira.
