History

The airport, originally called Merle Fogg Field was constructed on May 1, 1929. It was named after a World War I pilot who moved to Fort Lauderdale to create his own airline.

In 1942 the airport was renamed and became Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station. The base was initially used for refitting civil airliners for military service before they were ferried across the Atlantic to Europe and North Africa.

The US Navy built 3 runways and a control tower during the Second World War. In June 1946 the Naval Air Station is decommissioned and in Jan 1948 the facility was handed over to Broward County.

The airport has also been used by filmmakers numerous times, the most famous of these being scenes from Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise.
