San Diego International Airport History
Following Lindbergh's historic first solo transatlantic flight, San Diego began construction of the San Diego Lindbergh Field Airport in 1928. The airport was granted International status in 1934.
During World War II the Army Air Corps used the airfield and after the war commercial air service increased swiftly at the airport.
As use of the airport increased, Terminal 1 and 2 were opened in 1967 and 1979 respectively. With terminal 3 being constructed and opened in 1996, during which time the airport was renamed as San Diego International Airport.
One of the airport’s two runways was later closed as it was too short in length and rarely used.
