private jet charter Barra Airport Barra Airport is the only airport in the world where scheduled and private charter flights land and take off from the beach. At high tide the runways are under water.

Barra is a popular destination for private charter flights, although the sand runways mean that only small propellor aircraft can land or take off at the airport.

Barra Airport History

The beach on the north coast of the Scottish island of Barra was officially recognised as an airfield in 1936. A regular scheduled service ran from Barra to Glasgow in 1936 for £4 per seat.

In 1994 Highland and Islands Airports Limited took over the running of the airport.

The airport has 3 runways marked by wooden poles on the sands. Aircraft land into the wind.

Barra airport flights"Seeing the whole island in all its beauty as you approach and the landing on the beach just puts the icing on the cake. I've flown here many times and it never fails to impress me.";

"Wonderful views, a very challenging approach and the unique experience of landing on a beach."

"As a small child I spent most of my holidays on Barra and was entranced by the sight and sound of the aircraft landing on and taking off from the beach. As it was the only airport I had ever seen I assumed that all airports in the world were on beaches! It was a great surprise to me to find out that everywhere else planes land on and take off from concrete!"

Barra airport flightsIn our recent "Favourite Airport Approaches" poll you said:
"Beautiful scenery and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to land on a beach"
"Spectacular approach over beautiful islands, soft landing on the beach of white shells, taxiing up to the tiny terminal and then realising the whole island breathes to the rhythmn of the tide, as you can only land at low tide so the bus, the post-office and the shops open after the plane has landed with mail, people and newspapers."
