Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport History
The airport originally came into being after several local groups took control of the Twin City Speedway race track, originally giving it the name "Speedway Field". In 1921, it was renamed "Wold-Chamberlain Field" for the World War I pilots Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Champerlain. In 1948, it was renamed to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
In 1970, the airport had a claim to fame as it was the primary filming location for the film "Airport", though the film presented the airport as a fictional Chicago-based Lincoln International.
