SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR PRIVATE JET TRAVEL TO THE RIO OLYMPICS
A number of airports have been busy preparing for the additional demand for private jet landings and departures. Rio de Janerio International Airport (popularly known as Galeão) will be the major focus of attention from private charter flights and the airport has undergone a major development project in preparation since it was privatised two years ago – with more aircraft parking; new management tools; and a new FBO.
The other Rio area airport that will be open for business aviation is Santos Dumont Airport. Unless private jets land first outside the city and have a security clearance check, they will only be allowed to land in Rio during nighttime hours (02.00 - 08.00 at Galeão and 00.00 - 06.00 at Santos Dumont). This is also to try to mitigate road congestion.
Other airports further from the city, such as Cabo Frio airport (162km away) and Sorocaba Airport near São Paulo, will also be busy as slots fill up in Rio, and will be used as aircraft parking and bases for crews. Long range flights from Europe and the USA into Rio will see additional demand, but we are also expecting to see a particular increase in regional private charter flights, from those flying domestically within Brazil.
Overall our advice is to book as far ahead as possible if you are travelling by private jet to Rio for the Olympics, to secure ideal landing slots and aircraft availability.
RIO DE JANEIRO AIRPORT CHOICES FOR THE OLYMPICS
Rio de Janeiro International Airport
Rio de Janeiro International Airport, is the main airport in Rio. It is located in the city of Galeao, in the northwest of Rio. The second busiest airport in Brazil, it is ideal for long-haul flights.
As the only international airport in Rio, we recommend you use this airport only if coming directly from abroad. Maracana is twenty minutes away by car, with Copacabana 30 minutes and Deodoro 35 minutes away.
Santos Dumont Airport
Santos Dumont Airport is the second busiest airport in Rio de Janeiro. The airport is located in a central location, on a small island just off the business center. The different Olympic events in Copacabana are only 10 and 35 minutes away from Santos Dumont. You can even join the Gloria Marina (sailing competition) just a short walk from the airport.
Usually used for flights between Sao Paulo and Rio, we advise that you use this airport if travelling from another Brazilian city. It is advisable to book your flights to Santos Dumont Airport as soon as possible, since open slots are limited.
Cabo Frio Airport
Cabo Frio Airport, located to the west of Rio, is the closest airport alternative outside Rio. Its runway is suitable for aircraft of all sizes and it can be connected to Rio by road in around 2 hours.
Jacarepagua Airport (closed during the Olympics)
Jacarepagua Airport, located to the west of Rio, will be only be accessible by police and other official services during the games. It will be closed for other general aviation and private jet flights.
