Black Rock City Municipal Airport

Overview summary

Black Rock City Municipal Airport is an ephemeral airport used solely a music and arts festival in the Black Rock Desert that takes place each year in late August/early September. 

Also known by its FAA identifier, 88NV, this airport can be difficult to fly into given its temporary nature. It is non-towered, so pilots communicate via a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency for safety information in addition to critical details about the landing pattern.

A pair of mile-long runways are roughly outlined in the desert during the event, one strictly for take-offs and the other strictly for landings, and is not lit.

Because of the unique air traffic and safety issues associated with this unique airport, only a small handful of pilots and aircraft are allowed to use the airport. Additionally, due to the changes to the surface each year, information about the airport is subject to change, making it unusable some years.
