History
The airport was built in 1983 to replace the old Marka International Airport which could no longer handle the increasing traffic levels. Two parallel runways were constructed, both of 3,660 metres in length, along with two passenger terminals and one cargo terminal.
In November 2007, the airport was taken over by the Airport International Group (AIG), who invested $750 million in the upkeep and renovation of the airport.
The airport is currently going through a major redevelopment phase which includes the refurbishment of the two existing passenger terminals, as well as the construction of a brand new 86,000 square metre state-of-the-art passenger terminal. When this project is completed (expected Spring 2012), the total passenger capacity of the airport will increase to 13 million per year.
