Founded in 1937 and named Sydenham Airport, the site as used as a civilian airport, until the Royal Navy requisitioned the site during WWII, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the site was used by non-military personnel. In 1983 the airport was used for commercial fights.
In 2006 Belfast City Airport was renamed George Best Belfast City Airport, in memory of Northern Ireland football legend George Best.
