Berlin Schoenefeld Airport History
Berlin Schönefeld airport was opened on 15 October 1934 in order to support the nearby Henschel aircraft plant, which, by the end of the Second World War, had produced over 14,000 aircraft.
After German reunification in 1990, Berlin City Council decided that having a single airport that would be more efficient than the current three airports and would decrease the amount of aircraft noise from the airport within the city.
Therefore, it was decided to erect Berlin Brandenburg Airport at the current site of Schönefeld Airport, as part of an ongoing expansion project.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport is planned to merge with the current site of Berlin Schönefeld Airport, which is scheduled for opening in 2017.
Berlin Schoenefeld Airport Location
