Blaise Daigne International Airport was built to replace Dakar's smaller airport - Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport, which closed in December 2017.

Blaise Diagne Airport opened a day before the old airport closed. The airport was named after Blaise Diagne, who was the first black African MP and defended the rights of black Africans in the French army during World War I.
