Filton Aerodrome was established in 1916 by the Royal Flying Corps, after the manufacture of aeroplanes works had expanded during World War I. During the war, Filton airfield was used mainly as an aircraft acceptance facility and a flying school. In 1941, a concrete runway was installed as the aerodrome which after World War II was extended . Production of Concorde began and continued through the 1960s and 1970s and the runway was further extended. British Aerospace took over ownership of the Filton airfield site in 1977.
