AIRPORT HISTORY
Built in 1955, Düsseldorf Mönchengladbach airport was first used as a landing site for gliders. That same year, it also served as a base for the British Rhine Army conducting military exercises for NATO's Cold War rapid reaction forces.
Airport developments included a new control tower and passenger terminal in 1957, and a paved runway in 1970.
