East Midlands Airport History

In 1963, Castle Donington Airfield, a former RAF base decommissioned in 1946, was bought by East Midlands Airport Joint Committee.In 1965, East Midlands Airport officially opened and in the following years the runway was extended and a second terminal to increase freight operations was opened.

In 1996, the new departures building opened and another cargo terminal was added the following year.

In 2008 redevelopment work was completed which included a new shopping centre and restaurant. The airport also reached a record half a million passengers.
