Grand Cayman Airport History

Owen Roberts Airport opened in 1952 for commercial flight operations. It is named after Wing Commander Owen Roberts of the British Royal Air Force, who was instrumental in setting up flight services between the US and the Cayman Islands after World War II.

An expansion plan for the airport's terminal was announced in 2007, with further work taking place in 2012 to upgrade the passenger facilities.

In 2014 a major $55 million renovation and expansion project was announced incorporating all three airports in the Cayman Islands. At Owen Roberts this includes the building of a second public terminal building, and to expand the airport's runway, existing buildings and taxiways. Phase 1 of this project was completed in 2016.
