Hannover Airport serves as international gateway to passengers in the region around the city of Hannover. The airport operates different terminals, including a General Aviation Terminal, which is dedicated to the executive handling of business and private charter.

A separate facility to the east of the main terminal was additionally constructed and is serving exclusively the Royal Air Force for the transport of British troops from and to the northern parts of Germany.

History

Initially, a small airfield on the outskirt of the city served Hannover and adjacent areas. In 1952 a new airport was inaugurated in Langenhagen, replacing these facilities. The airport continuously expanded with further on site developments, including the construction of two additional terminals in 1973. The same terminals are still in operations. Its principles of compact design were used in the construction of today’s Russian second largest airport Sheremetyevo International Airport.

The airport also hosted the InternationaleLuft- und Raumfahrtausstellung, the largest air show in Germany with a similar format to the International Air Shows in Paris and Farnborough. The event was held between 1957 and 1990 at the Hanoverian airport facilities before moving to the German capital Berlin. Today, the airport ranks as ninth largest in Germany and one of the very few with a 24 hours operation.

Location

Hannover Airport is located near the city of Langenhagen and approximately 7.5 miles north the city centre of Hannover. The air terminal is situation just off the intersection of two major and busy motorways, one connecting the South with the Nord and another connecting the West with the East of the country.
