Klagenfurt Airport History
With its completed construction in 1914, the Klagenfurt Airport operated initially as a military airfield during the two global wars. Civil operations from the air terminal started in 1925, serving connections to its neighbour countries as well as to major cities within Austria. These were extended in the 1950s to overseas destinations such as Venezuela and Brasil.
Klagenfurt Airport experienced a steady decrease in passenger traffic over the past few years. This is mainly based on economical reasons from different commercial operators. Today the airport is focusing in the handling and logistic of freight, serving the relatively closely located harbours of the Adriatic Sea in the South.
