Madrid Cuatro Vientos Airport
Overview summary
Madrid has an enormous span of approximately 230 square miles, operating three civil airports. Madrid-Cuatro Vientos is the oldest airport in Spain and situated south-east on the outskirt of the Spanish capital. A former military base, it also serves to the Madrilenian Police for road traffic surveillance by air and general aviation.
The building facilities are certainly an alternative to the congested Madrid-Barajas in the northern part of the city. However, the short runway is set up for visual flight rules (VFR) only and therefore only operational to helicopters, piston engine aircraft, medium size turbo-props and small private jets.

History
Cuatro-Vientos refers to “Four Winds” in Spanish. The airport was established in 1911 as a flying school for pilots. It was only three years later when the oldest Spanish Traffic control tower was constructed. With Madrid-Barajas airport already in operation, it was given authorisation to serve as national airport for civil aviation. Minor developments were completed over the years, including the extension of the runway. Despite being able to serve both international and domestic passenger traffic, the air terminal remained limited to visual flight rules (VFR) only.
With a separate section, the air terminal continuous to serve as military air base. In fact, it maintains an air and space museum in honour to the Spanish Air Force. Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport was chosen as meeting place for religious events, hosted by the head of the world Catholic church, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
