The airport site is one of the locations for the German Aerospace Centre, also known as DLR.
The Space Control Centre based at the airport has been the headquarters for the Galileo Satellite System, as well as other research and scientific projects.
In 1983, the first astronaut from West Germany, Ulf Merbold, flew to space on board a space shuttle, and this mission was supervised by the German Space Operations Center, based at Oberpfaffenhofen Airport.
