Hans Christian Andersen Airport History
The airport is named after the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, who is known for famous pieces including “The Little Mermaid”, “The Snow Queen”, “The Ugly Duckling”, and many more.
Hans Christian Andersen Airport was constructed during the time of the German occupation in 1943. Ever since, the airfield in the village of Beldringe evolved several developments, with its biggest project in 1969 when part of its facilities burned down. It took construction workers 1 year to built the current air terminal and traffic tower. A continuous increase in passenger figures saw further minor extensions in following decades, such as the reinforcement of the runway in order to carry heavy aircraft.
In the 1980s the project of the suspension bridge (officially known as East Bridge) between the Islands of Zealand and the Funen Island was put in concrete terms. The decision to construct the link came in 1986, including a railway tunnel and a road connection. With the completion in 1998, the link was able to reduce travel time between the Danish islands remarkably, affecting negatively the commercial traffic out of Hans Christian Andersen Airport.
