The current international airport in Olbia was opened in 1974, with a runway to cater for jet aircraft. It replaced a previous smaller airport and runway, which had evolved from the World War II military base.
With tourism demand increasing, a significant €81M redevelopment project took place in the early '00s, to cater for the growing numbers of passengers flying in and out of Sardinia every year.
