History
Rome Ciampino Airport dates back to 1916. Named “Giovan Battista Pastine” and inaugurated on the Via Appia, Rome’s City Airport was first used to dock airships.
The Italian military exclusively operated Rome Ciampino airport until 1947 when the first passenger transport aircraft entered into service and flights began heading to the Italian capital.
Ciampino was Rome’s only airport until 15th January 1961 when Fiumicino International Airport was opened. Later named ‘Leonardo da Vinci Airport’, Rome Fiumicino was built as an International gateway with 3 runways and vast aprons to accommodate the world’s largest airliners.
