San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport opened in 1955. The island was previously serviced mainly through Isla Grande since 1929, but as tourism grew in Puerto Rico, so the demand for a larger airport grew as well.

It was eventually renamed for the country's first democratically elected governor, Luis Munoz Marin in 1985.

San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport saw infrastructure improvements from 1990 to 2000, totaling in about $128million. It then saw upgrades in 2008 and 2012 as new terminals were built.
