Aviation pioneer Eddie Martin opened John Wayne-Orange County Airport, which was originally called Eddie Martin Airport, in 1923. Martin operated a flying school at the airport and built the first aircraft hangar on the property in 1926. In 1935, Howard Hughes staged his world speed record-breaking flight from the airport.

The County of Orange purchased the airport from Martin in 1939 and was renamed Orange County Airport. The army took control of the airfield during World War II but returned it to the city after the conclusion of the war. The Santa Ana Dragstrip was operated on the airfield during the 1950s. In 1979, the airport was renamed the John Wayne-Orange County Airport after the famous actor who lived in neighboring Newport Beach.
