Overview summary

Hewanorra International Airport is one of two airports serving Saint Lucia. The larger of the two, Hewanorra International Airport has become a gateway to the Caribbean, connecting many international passengers from other islands or countries.

Saint Lucia is an island country in the Caribbean Sea and part of the Lesser Antilles. The island group is located between the Greater Antilles in the northwest and the South American territory. Europeans were the first settlers on the island, while its ruler changed several times between the French and British. In 1814 the island fell under the British Crown colony, following its acclamation as independent state within the Commonwealth in 1979. Henwanorra International Airport History

Henwanorra International Airport was formerly known as Beane Army Airfield and served as military air base to the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. The purpose of the airfield was to defend the island country from any enemy attack. Its operation started in 1941, while refurbishments were undertaken after the global conflicts terminated in order to provide commercial operations to the island.

Today, the airport is able to handle large wide body and other similar intercontinental aircraft, handling nearly half a million passengers each year. Several developments have been proposed in order to cope with the forecasted traffic. This includes a separate terminal, doubling the size of the actual infrastructure, allowing increased efficiency in passenger flow.

The master plan would also comprise of the runway extension, comforting the landing of double-deck wide body aircraft such as the A380. Additionally, the disused second runway, which was part of the military airfield, should be exploited for the cargo operation.

Henwanorra International Airport Location
