Stockholm Arlanda Airport History

Opened in 1960 to commercial traffic, Stockholm Arlanda was designed and built as an intercontinental Airport, featuring multiple runways and passenger terminals with the capacity to support large airliners like the DC-8 and Boeing 707 for long haul flights, at the beginning of the jet age.

During the sixties and seventies air traffic increased significantly on a global scale and saw the introduction of the Boeing 747 jumbo jet into Arlanda, operating daily services to and from New York. With 3 runways and 5 terminals, Stockholm Arlanda was sufficiently equipped to deal with the ever growing amounts of traffic that visited the airport during the nineties.
