History
Prior to the area having an airport, the city of Dallas proposed the idea of having a joint airport withthe city of Fort Worth in 1927. Fort Worth rejected it and the cities instead set about opening their own airports.
In 1940, the Civil Aeronautics Administration set aside $1.9 million dollars for the construction of Dallas-Fort Worth but the cities yet again disagreed over the project and it was scrapped.
By 1961 the FAA refused to invest additional funds into separate airports in Dallas and Fort Worth.
With the old Fort Worth Airport being abandoned and Dallas Love Field at maximum capacity, the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth agreed on a site equidistant between the cities.
Construction began in 1969 and the airport opened in 1974. In 1979, long distance flights from Dallas Love Field were banned bringing more international and long distance traffic to Dallas-Fort Worth.
