An airport in the Docklands area of London was first proposed in 1981. In 1982 Captain Harry Gee landed a de Havilland Canada Dash 7 aircraft on nearby Heron Quays to demonstrate the feasibility of the project.
Prince Charles laid the foundation stone for the airport in 1986, and the first commercial flight took off from London City in 1987.
London City Airport is now one of the most popular airports for private jet charter passengers.
"Coming in over the lights of London, following the Thames until you touch down on a small strip near the O2 and Canary Wharf is brilliant. It's a great little airport, so easy to use and in a fantastic location."
"It is the best approach in the world, you fly all over the city, you land in the middle of the water and the airport delivers an amazing service. It is small, quick, a boutique-airport with free Wifi! London City Airport, best airport ever!"
London City Airport is 6 miles from the City of London, and just 3 miles from Canary Wharf.
