In 1918 the first postal flights took place between Nice and Corsica. By the late 1920s Cote d'Azur Airport was established and being used by the Nice Flying Club.
The airport was used as a military and air force base during World War II, and in 1944 a hard-surface runway was added. During the 1950s-1980s Nice and the French Riviera region became an increasingly popular tourist destination, and in 1978 a second runway was added.
